why is it illegal to own a stun gun in the state of Michigan for self protection?

I was robbed two weeks ago at the bus station on my way to work. I had thought to obtain a stun gun for self protection. Why is it that only robbers, thugs and street scum can just have their way with people and victimize them at will and we are denied protection?

Will this idea protect oneself from a stun gun shock?

A stun gun is only effective when it makes direct contact, right?

What would happen if I were to sew a piece of aluminum in between a layer of clothing? (Imagine the aluminum is sewn between a t shirt, or other piece of clothing) will the aluminum conduct the electricity through itself, rather than having the electricity of the stun gun make contact with the body?

Taser is a Stunning Stun Gun

July 31st, 2009 admin No comments
With crime on the rise from one end of the country to the other, more people are looking for non-lethal ways to protect themselves and their families. There are increasing numbers and types of weapons on the market today, and one of the most reliable and effective weapons for self-defense is the Taser Stun Gun.

The Taser brand is synonymous with quality. Taser Stun Guns have been used by private citizens since 1994 and they are known for getting the job done – keeping you safe. They deliver a powerful jolt to a would-be attacker, thus providing you with the time to get away and get help while your attacker is temporarily incapacitated.

Taser Stun Guns have a consumer-friendly design. They come with clear instructions and are easy to use, but that should not fool you or your attacker. They may be easy to use, but they are powerful, and they will disorient, stun and stop your would-be attacker long enough for you to get away and get help.

Taser Stun Guns work by shooting out darts attached to fifteen feet of wire with 50,000 volts of pure power flowing through the wire to the attacker, overriding the attacker’s central nervous system enough to incapacitate him or her without killing them.

Taser is considered a top-of-the-line brand name among stun guns. Its products will work well every time, and they are built to last. They are even being used by the police and military. They will protect you when you need to be protected from attack.

How Stun Guns Work

July 31st, 2009 admin No comments
Almost everyone knows that a stun gun discharges an electrical current, but how does that subdue a person? First we must consider that the human body uses an electrical system for communication from the brain to muscles, from senses such as touch, taste and sight to the brain. The nervous system uses an electrical impulse to travel from the brain down the nerve and to the muscle that the brain is telling to move, contract or lengthen. Basically the stun gun disrupts this communication system.

Stun guns operate on a high voltage low amperage charge. When a stun gun is discharged into a body it acts to overload the nervous system with excessive electricity traveling through the nerves and muscles. In general the brain has trouble deciphering the messages being sent and is unable to clearly communicate with the muscles. This often causes temporary paralysis, or overt fatigue. The charge is considered non-lethal and is not powerful enough to damage the attacker’s body unless applied for an extended period of time.

Stun guns come in several different styles. Some are even disguised as flashlights or cell phones. Typically they run on ordinary 9 volt alkaline batteries. Stun guns come in many different voltages as well. They can range from 100,000 volts to 950,000 or more volts. For an idea of electrical strength an 800,000 volt stun gun might generate 5-8 milliamps depending on the freshness of the battery. In general, the higher the voltage the quicker the effects of the stun gun will be felt. Other factors such as the size of the attacker, the amperage of the stun gun, and how long it is held on the attacker can figure into how quickly a stun gun can disable a person. Half a second should startle an attacker while one or two seconds should daze him and induce muscle spasms. Three seconds should make an attacker unbalanced with loss of muscle control.

Stun guns can be fired multiple times if the batteries are fresh. This gives protection against more than one attacker. Stun guns should be considered as a good source of personal protection.

Feeling unsafe is no way to go about living your life. Fortunately, there are many solutions to give you peace of mind while walking through uncharted territories or for safeguarding your home and family. Does a stun gun work through attacker’s down jacket?

Tasty Soup asked:

I am planning to buy a stun gun but I have a quick question.

Will a stun gun be effective if it is placed against the attacker’s down jacket? Does the tips of the stun gun have to be touch the attacker’s skin to be effective? Will it work through a T-shirt, a sweater, a leather jacket, etc?

Tested! Stun Guns! What Are Stun Guns And How Do They Work?

July 31st, 2009 admin No comments
Stun Guns are easy to use, non-lethal, defensive devices with interesting technology. A stun gun is a hand-held, battery-powered device designed to deliver an electric shock to an assailant. The electrical current is the same sort of current used to run your car or any battery operated apparatus.

Stun Guns are not guns in the traditional sense, because they do not shoot anything or anybody. Their technology allows them to be a potent and portable choice of self defense weapon.

A Stun Gun has two prongs at the end of the device. Touching an assailant with the prongs and pulling the trigger will create an electrical current to go from the prongs through the garments of the attacker into his body.

The pulsed current causes muscles to work super fast, quickly depleting them of needed blood sugars. It also interrupts the microscopic neurological stimulus that controls muscle movement. The results are disorientation and loss of balance.

The complete process takes only a few seconds. It can immobilize a person for up to 30 minutes. A Stun Gun will cause your assailant to lock up and collapse.

The results of being zapped with a Stun Gun are comparable to running a 25-mile marathon; the attacker just does not have any energy left. It is for this reason that this device gives you plenty of time to get away.

Stun Guns are not hard to use. To use a Stun Gun you need simply to grab your assailant, shove the Stun Gun into his torso and shoot. This will only take a second or so, depending on the sum of voltage in your Stun Gun.

Even though the voltage can be as high as 625,000 or more, the amperage is low, so it will not cause any permanent injury to the person who receives the shock. There is no proof that the electrical charge of the Stun Gun has adverse psychological or neurological effects. The effect on the heart or other major organ is very insignificant.

Most models include a safety switch to prevent accidental activation. The unit cannot produce a shock unless the safety switch is activated AND the On/Off switch is turned ON.

Stun Guns will not permanently injure or kill anyone because of the voltage. The technology used makes Stun Guns, at close range, extremely effective self-protection devices.

Stun Gun Versus Tasers

July 31st, 2009 admin No comments
Most people assume that there is no difference between a Taser and a stun gun except for the name. However, there are a few important differences between the two.

For one, stun guns do not shoot anything work only on direct contact. The probes located on the stun gun must be in contact with the assailant’s body; while the Taser can be used against an attacker from up to 15 feet away from the victim. This is done by shooting two electrical darts up to a range of 15 feet. The darts are still connected to the unit by wires that conduct the electrical current into the assailant’s body when the trigger is depressed.

There are other significant differences between the two such as; you only have one shot per cartridge with the Taser. After using your one shot, the unit can then only be used as a contact device or the cartridge has to be changed. On the other hand, a stun gun can be used as many times as you need it to and with today’s technology, they only require one to two seconds or less of contact.

Another difference of note would be that Taser is a brand name. They are a publicly traded company (TASR: Nasdaq) that was founded in September 1993 and is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. On the other hand, stun guns are manufactured mostly in Asia with the majority being imported from China and South Korea.

Each work similarly by taking a small amount of input voltage from the battery and increasing the voltage by use of capacitors to construct a large quantity of output voltage. Although, the output voltage is very powerful, it is not lethal as it is very low in amperage (less than 4 milliamps in most cases).

Each incapacitate the assailant in a similar way, which is by causing the muscles affected to contract painfully ,as well as, disrupting the nervous system. During the event, the body is also releasing a large amount of lactic acid into the system. The overall experience can be compared somewhat to getting a cramp, however this would be like no cramp you have ever experienced before and it would occur over a larger portion of the body. The effects do not last long and no permanent damage is done, though there may be small burn marks or puncture wounds where the unit contacts the skin.

Though there are many differences between a stun gun and a Taser, there are similarities as well. The way they incapacitate an assailant is similar and the size and convenience of each is comparable. Both are legal in most all of the United States and do not require a license or permit to own or carry.

Both have many obvious benefits and are highly effective. On comparison a simple differentia of the two boils down to one shoots and the other one does not. While this is significant, the most noticeable difference may be the cost. A Taser C2 costs up to $350.00 and come with 2 non-reusable cartridges (replacement cartridges cost around $40.00). Most stun guns are around $50.00 and do not require any kind of cartridges. The only thing that has to replaced is the battery which is a standard alkaline battery.

Considering the very significant difference in price, a stun gun may be the more reasonable solution for most individuals and will provide them with a highly effective and powerful self defense too that they can afford. However upon a side by side review of each, the Taser would be the better option due to the fact that it offers two self defense solutions. A proven and powerful defense that can be applied from a distance of up to 15 feet ,as well as, a contact device that can be applied in close quarters or after the cartridge is used. With the added element of a built in laser sight to ensure a good aim, the Taser is the better option for most people, if cost was not an issue.

Choosing between the two would certainly be a financial consideration and personal preference but either one is a highly effective self defense tool and may very well save your life.
