The question is – will it be effective against an armed robbery? How about a robbery with some sort of sharp weapon? How long does a taser incapacitate, and will I have enough time to get away?
I understand that there may be restrictions depending on where I live – I did a bit of research and found that it’s OK for me to carry a taser where I live.
I don’t care about losing a taser cartridge – I consider it a bullet.

Should be effective enough to give you time to run for help / to safety.

Unless you’ve got a gun, your best defense is to just give an armed mugger your wallet. I wouldn’t bet my life on a so-called less than lethal weapon, unless you have an assailant who’s already attacking you and isn’t giving you a choice. The darts could miss or hit a piece of hard or thick clothing without penetrating, and then you’re screwed.

Your state/county/city may have restrictions on the possession/carry of a taser. Also, it may not be legal to carry a taser on your person or as a concealed weapon in federal, state, county, municipal or other public buildings.

Of course, one of the *many* problems with a taser is that the propelled probes are attached to the gun, so you’d have to leave it behind once you used it; unless you’re willing to hang around and remove the probes. They cost about $400.
