There is a lot of confusion about the difference between stun guns and tasers partly because the media especially television seems to interchange the two frequently. They are not the same.

While there are some similarities there are many more differences. As a consumer it is in your best interest to know the differences and similarities.

Here’s what they share in common.

Non Lethal Self Defense Products. By definition they are both in a group of products meant to give you time to get away from a dangerous situation and seek help or subdue an assailant so no harm can come to you. Best just to get the heck away. No lasting damage can come from any non lethal self defense product.

Stun Devices. They are both considered stun devices.

Used by Law Enforcement. Almost all law enforcers carry a stunguns. Tasers are carried and used by over 11,000 police departments in the U.S. and in an additional at least seven other counties

Here’s how they are different.

1.Price. Stunguns range in price from the low twenties to nearly ninety dollars. Tasers start at three hundred and go up to one thousand dollars for civilian models. Police models are more expensive. Discounts are sometimes available.

2.Size. Stunguns are smaller, some as small as three inches. The smallest tazer is about the size of your hand but most are hand gun size.

3.How They Work. Stun Guns disrupt the nervous system. Tasers disrupt both the nervous and muscular system.

4.Range. A stun gun must be “applied to the hide”as I call it while a taser has a range up to fifteen feet.

5.Effectiveness. Stun guns are on average 86 percent effective and tasers are nearly 100 percent effective. That is critical in life and death situations.

6.Power. A stungun transmits from 80,000-975,000 volts with 7-14 watts of energy. A taser transmits 50,000 volts with 18 watts of energy. It is the wattage that makes the difference here.

Those are the basic similarities and differences. The differences between them are important for you to know because they both save lives. The one you choose could save YOUR life.

In other words, if an average everyday citizen is considered to be a potential terrorist threat, or part of a terrorist organization, he/she can be secretly investigated. This means their phone could be tapped, their internet connections monitored, etc., without them knowing. While this may sound like a huge violation of privacy – and no doubt it is – under Patriot Act these eavesdropping and investigation methods are perfectly legal.

Can you be subject to the Patriot Act? Certainly, and so can every other American that the government believes may pose a terrorist thereat to society. Now you may be wondering how many Americans are secretly being monitored or have their phones tapped in the name of the Patriot Act. The truth is, no one really knows, and that’s what makes this supposed act of public protection, for lack of a better term, eerie.

That being said, the Patriot Act is meant to provide America with more security, not to allow the government the opportunity to spy on anyone it feels like. Thus, it is highly unlikely that the average American secretly has their phone tapped.

Still, many Americans believe that the Patriot Act was rushed through congress due to the panic of September 11, and believe that the act needs to be banned, or some changes need to be made in order to ensure that American are protected, but still have their right to privacy and freedom.

Counterfeit money is an uncommon yet unfortunate reality. The chances of receiving counterfeit dollar bills are very small, but not impossible. Many incidents have been reported of people unknowingly getting fake money from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and bank tellers.

If you suspect you have been given fake money by an ATM, there are many ways you can verify your suspicions. Compare the bill to another of the same denomination that you are sure is not counterfeit. Closely examine the printing, the patterns, the colors, the text and the feel of the paper. Does it feel and look the same? If so, then the bill is likely not counterfeit. If you notice any discrepancies, you are likely looking at a fake bill. Hold the bill up to a lamp and look for the verification strip running through it. Is it there? If not, you are surely looking at a fake. If you are still unsure, you can easily procure a special marking pen that will help you verify the bill’s authenticity.

If you suspect your bill is indeed a fake, do not try and spend it. Even though you came by the bill through honest means, trying to spend it is a crime and can get you in serious legal trouble. Even if you claim you didn’t know you were dealing with counterfeit money, you will have a hard time explaining your case to the police.

The first thing you should do if you draw counterfeit money from a bank machine is contact the bank. Most major banks in the United States have 24-hour telephone operators standing by to help their customers deal with problems and questions. Scan the area inside the bank. You’ll likely find the 800 number printed somewhere on or near the ATM machine. If not, flip over your bank card and look for the number on the back.

If you make contact, tell your bank’s representative about the situation in the utmost detail. The bank might also want to contact the authorities, local police or the U.S. Secret Service, which deals with issues of forged and counterfeit folding money.

If you are not able to contact your bank’s representative, call the police and apprise them of the situation. Make note of the time and the location of the ATM or bank. The police might want you to turn in the counterfeit money, or hold onto it and turn it in to the bank the next day.

Whatever you do, do not spend the money. I cannot express how important it is that you do not attempt to pass counterfeit money.

If you follow the correct procedures, you should be able to get your money back without incident. Unfortunately, that is not guaranteed. If you have trouble getting your money replaced, examine your renters’ or homeowners’ insurance policy, if you have one. Many of these policies have provisions safeguarding against counterfeit money, and you may be able to get your money replaced.

Nobody wants to get fake money from an ATM machine. But if you do, you should do your best to be responsible and rectify the situation.

Columbine 04/20/99, Utah Mall Shooting 02/07, Virginia Tech Massacre 04/16/07. These are all active shooter situations where armed subject(s) enter a public place to murder as many people as possible. These incidents have become more common in our society and it is the Patrol Officer who will be first on scene and may have to confront heavily armed suspect(s). Hopefully your agency has developed training and procedures for responding to active shooter situations. These situations are extremely dangerous for the responding Officer(s) because by the time we arrive, the scene is chaotic and information is usually limited and basic.

Obviously you will want to adhere to your department’s procedures if you find yourself responding to one of these situations during your career. The importance of a fast and rapid response by Officers cannot be stressed enough when talking about an active shooter situation. Officers must respond rapidly and and move to eliminate the threat immediately and without hesitation. We have to remember that as we are responding to one of these situations people are being killed and our quick response and action could save many lives.

Even if the suspect(s) commit ******* before we arrive, our rapid response into the shooting scene will allow us to render life-saving first aid and allow for the deployment of more highly trained medical first responders to treat the wounded. These are not situations where we setup a perimeter and wait for the Swat Team. Swat will be used if we can contain the active shooter(s) in a specific location where they are trapped or if hostages are taken.

The ideal situation would be for 2-4 Officers to arrive at the scene and then form a fire-team to deploy into the active shooter area.A fire-team is simply a group of Officers working together as a single unit to complete a required task. It makes sense that 2-4 Officers working together will be more capable of dealing with an active shooter than a single Officer. A 4 Officer fire-team is ideal because the 3rd Officer will protect the rear as your team moves around the shooting scene.

If I was the first Officer on the scene of an active shooter I would wait for the next Officer or Officers to arrive before deploying into the shooting scene. A team needs a leader so it would make sense for the most experienced Officer or highest ranking Officer to be the leader. If a member of your team happens to be a Swat or Tactical Officer then he becomes the leader for obvious reasons. Because we are in rapid-response mode we want to form up quickly and then deploy into the shooting scene.

With a 4 man fire-team I would want a minimum of 2 Officers with long guns and a subgun if available. Because most active shooter situations are in confined areas like school buildings & officer buildings, compact weapons like mp5’s, short barrel shotguns, and handguns are ideal. I carry a short barrel pistol-grip shotgun and I love it for close quarter combat scenarios. It gives me the knock down power but affords me the ability to crawl, climb, jump, and run around with ease.

It is ideal to have someone with a long gun like an an-15 because you may need someone to take a distance shot or you may encounter someone with body armor. Think of your fire-team as a mini swat team and remember that Swat Teams bring an assortment of weapons and equipment for good reason.

I wont get into any specifics on tactics for a 2-4 man fire-team because this is something that needs to be taught in person in a live action setting. As a fire-team you stay together and do not get separated unless absolutely necessary. It may become necessary to split the team in two if you have the suspect(s) pinned down and you need to perform a flanking move. You may also need to split the team up if you come across injured victims who need to be removed from the scene.

As you and your team begin to deploy into the shooting scene you will hopefully have more intelligence being relayed to you by dispatch. Survivors will have escaped to safety by now and will have called 911 with suspect(s) descriptions and direction of travel. You will also encounter witnesses who you can quickly interview for intelligence on the movement of the suspect(s).

It also obviously important to communicate with dispatch and other Officers so that you can coordinate your movement with other fire-teams that may also be deploying into the area. Several fire-teams converging on an active shooter can mean a very quick end to the threat. Always keep in mind that there may be more than 1 active shooter even though initial reports indicated only one. It is also important to remember that an active shooter could possible ditch his weapon(s) and attempt to flee the area by acting as an innocent victim. This is the reason that you saw so many kids being forced to walk single file with their hands on their heads during the Columbine shootings.

Every active shooter situation is unique and has different elements that will require different methods and tactics. The key things that I am trying to stress is that it is imperative that we respond quickly and we deploy into the shooting scene with other Officers and a team so that we can safely & quickly eliminate the threat(s) and save lives. Police departments must train for these situations so that their Officers will be prepared in the event that one of these dangerous situations happen in their city. It is unfortunate that we will be seeing more and more of these active shooter situations in the future but with proper training and equipment we can end these quickly and save lives in the process.

When I told my best friend, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, my wife and I were moving to Mexico, his reply was as follows: “I guess you won’t have access to a telephone or the Internet.”

I was dumbfounded almost to the point of not being able to make a coherent reply! Here was a well-educated man, well traveled throughout Europe, who was under the impression that Mexico was still in the Dark Ages without access to modern technology. He, I found, was not alone in his ignorance about Mexico.

While preparing for our move to Mexico, we received, whether we wanted it or not, all manner of “advice” from family and friends which amounted to warnings of how we would be in immediate peril if we went through with our insane decision to expatriate to Mexico. Some of the “advice” was ridiculous; some came from bigoted ignorance. Here are some of my favorites:

- “If you dare drink the water you will get bloody dysentery and die.”

- “Are you crazy? The bandits will kill you down there!”

- “Roving gangs of American-haters will drag you right out of restaurants and kill you on the sidewalk in broad daylight.”

- “You will have to wash you clothes in the river.”

- “Mexicans will lie to you every chance they get.”

I mean, where in the world do they get this stuff? These are college-educated people. How is it that college-educated Americans can be so sociologically and factually ignorant of Mexico?

Have you ever been at a social gathering and someone mentions that so-and-so is vacationing in Mexico? Have you noticed the immediate, harsh, and frightened reaction of everyone?

“Oh my. I hope they don’t drink the water!”

“I heard that it is so dangerous ‘down there’ that you get snatched right off the street by the police just because you are an American!”

“Oh, they’d better be careful. I heard the cab drivers will take you out into the desert, strip you naked, and leave you for the coyotes!”

Here is where I think they get these fables:

“My sister’s neighbor told her that his cousin knew a friend whose mother talked with the baker whose brother-in-law went to Mexico on business and talked with the waiter in the hotel who told him of this story…” And on it goes!

I am talking about strong emotions when it comes to the subject of Mexico! Most often, the stories you will hear from your American family and friends are rumor, innuendo, or sheer nonsense. What is the deal here?

I am not sure that I know the answer to that question. It appears the news media has a lot to do with it because they report only the most vile and scary news that happens in Mexico. Mexico is not a perfect place in which to live because it contains fallible human beings who make some of the same mistakes and commit some of the same crimes as in the United States.

However, having conceded that point, an American must take a long, hard look at the so-called dangers in Mexico. For example, Mexico is not one of the most dangerous countries in the world. According to online almanac website, http://www.aneki.com, the United States of America is in the top 16 most dangerous countries in which to live. Mexico is not even on the list.

Therefore, to those fellow Americans who get all bent out of shape over the perceived dangers Mexico has to offer, I say, “Get some perspective people!”

Every time there is a school shooting, we hear about arming the teachers with guns. With all the bank robberies that go on, we have never heard about arming the bank tellers with guns. The American people are saying that bank tellers are not important enough to be secured. Shortly after the shooting at Columbine the idea of arming teachers with guns came about full force. Teachers and other school administrators are there to teach our children.

A total of 6,985 bank robberies occurred last year alone. We may hear of 4 school shootings a year. Bank tellers deal with the public everyday. They may face an attempted bank robber that maybe highly intoxicated, on drugs, or just completely desperate. None of these situations make things safe for a bank teller in their job. The teller has no security between the assailant and themselves, except for the counter. The counter would be easy for anyone to jump over.

Bank tellers are extremely vulnerable to threats and bank robberies. Bank tellers do not get advanced notice that the bank is going to get robbed until it actually happens. With school shootings, another student knew about the plan before it happened and that person never told the proper authorities. Probably because the kids thought that no one would believe them. For example a boy calls 911 to get help for his mom. His first call was taken as a prank.

The boy called back four hours later and the dispatcher still thought it was a prank. When the police finally arrived at the boy’s house, his mother was dead. We can not take what our children say lightly. Maybe that student that knew about the shooting plan and did tell the proper authorities. That student was either brushed off by the proper authorities or the authorities did not believe that student. With no action being taken, it is no surprise that american’s are immune to the violence that goes on in the schools.

Teachers deal with our children 90% of the time. Most teachers see parents of their students a couple times a week to a couple times a year depending on the grade. There are very few instances of an adult walking into the school with the intent to go on a shooting massacre. The schools should have surveillance cameras to monitor locations in the school. The schools should set standards by installing metal detectors at every entrance/exit including emergency exits and security guards at every entrance.

These entrances should have surveillance camera systems all activities. The schools have other options of preventing school shootings. Arming the teachers with guns should never be an option. There are a lot of teachers that are female and can be easily over powered by a student. The assailants that are involved in the school shooting are students. There are many teachers that are not stable. There are teachers who are heavy drinkers, drug abusers, and who perform in child abuse acts.

Other options that are available to both bank tellers and teacher are arming with pepper spray and taser stun guns. Making one entrance and exit accessible to the public with metal detectors and security guards. Better surveillance systems with someone to monitor activity at all given times and adding more security guards. Arming bank tellers is highly more important as arming teachers. Bank tellers should have to go through extensive training to be able to arm themselves with guns and will required continual training throughout their careers.

There should be pay raise for the tellers that complete and passes all the training that would go along with arming themselves. You never hear of a bank teller being suspended for child abuse, drugs or drinking. They deal with thousands of dollars a day. Being in a bank robbery is a very scary thing. Bank teller stays calm during the robbery and need to be praised for that. They go to work everyday never knowing if their bank will be robbed today.

While the purpose of this article is not to scare or intimidate you but to expose you to the reality of the dangers in today’s society. In the United States there is a rape committed every three minutes and chances are that you know of someone that has been raped or sexually assaulted. But the current sexual assault and rape statistics are only a fraction of the violent crimes that are committed against women in America. With this said what are some of the things that can be done to prevent this from happening to you or your loved ones?

There are always law enforcement personnel and possibly some good people who may be nearby in the event you are attacked by a violent criminal. However it is not wise to rely on this type of help being readily available when it is needed most. In fact the only person you can solely rely on is yourself, so it pays to become familiar with the self defense options that are available to you at this time. Keep in mind that even the most experienced martial artists can be caught by surprise and injured during a violent assault. One alarming statistic is that men are usually the victims of violent attacks so just imagine what type of damage can be done to a female attack victim.

Many instances of attacks against women can be handled by looking your assailant in the eye and telling them to stop, or by just walking with confidence. Sometimes women who are not trained in self defense but have some knowledge of and are familiar with self defense products could possibly escape an attacker. So while there are no guarantees that you will be safe and secure at all times being armed with your personal protection device of choice may afford you the opportunity to ward off an aggressive attacker. Women have an assortment of choices when looking for self defense products which are effective and affordable. These include the following:

Pepper Spray may be the most commonly used self defense product for women. It is easy to use, easy to conceal and quick in effect. Pepper sprays use the main ingredient found in hot peppers. When sprayed into the attacker’s face it causes a severe burning sensation to the eyes which will temporarily blind them and also restricts the breathing of the aggressor. Many defense sprays also have UV dye in them to assist the authorities in identifying the perpetrator.

While most every woman can point and spray pepper spray toward their attacker, it is recommended that a formal class be taken on how to effectively use pepper spray for self defense be attended. This will give an added confidence to the person using it for self defense purposes, and insure that it is used in the most effective manner possible.

Stun guns are also a safe and effective self defense product, but remember that contact with the assailant is necessary for a stun gun to do its job. A stun gun will give an electric shock to the attacker causing them to become incapacitated due to the constricting of their muscles rendering them incapable of movement for several minutes. It will take anywhere from 3 to 5 seconds for the full effect of a stun gun to be utilized. However many times just having a stun gun available and in sight is enough of a deterrent to a mugger or rapist.

The best alternative for a stun device for personal protection is a Taser product. The most obvious advantage of the type of device is that it can be used from a distance. A Taser will use compressed air to propel two metal barbs attached to 15 foot wires that will penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing. Using (EMD) Electro Muscular Disruption Technology the Taser while not as cost effective as pepper spray or hand held stun devices is the top of the line in non lethal personal self defense products.

There are other self defense products for women that could also be useful but are rather dangerous like the handgun and a knife. These weapons can cause much more damage to an attacker including death, however if taken away from you and turned against you can also cause the same damage to you or a loved one.

Terrorists are raised and learning the roots of the delinquency problems such as abuse and neglect can help raise flags about certain individuals.

You will also need to have a clean understanding of the American legal systems as a homeland security specialist. The conventional hierarchy of the legal system should be clearly understood because you will be an employee of this system.

The interests of society and the rights of individuals are being weighed and are a primary concern of police officers today. As an agent of homeland security you will deal with the constantly changing and evolving area of law enforcement working with police and officers.

Cultural diversity is very important as a homeland security officer. You need to know the different cultures of the people you are responsible for policing. Agents need to be able to narrow down the variables of the different cultures of individuals. This is not a risk an agent can afford taking if they don’t know the different backgrounds and cultures. Culture norms change all of the time for people and it is important to stay educated and on top of the different changes.

One of the jobs you might have as a homeland security agent is to catch coyotes at the border trying to smuggle in illegal drugs and illegal aliens into the country. This is an ongoing problem in the United States and the need for homeland security agents is growing dramatically.

Most of the jobs as homeland security agents reside at the border of Mexico. The problems with illegal drugs being brought into the United States are astounding. The amount of dangerous criminals crossing the borders illegally is even worse. There are hundreds of people dying each year from dehydration and heat exhaustion trying to make it in the high temperatures. Homeland security agents are needed to lower these numbers and provide safety for the citizens of the country.

As a Homeland Security Specialist in the criminal justice field you will be working closely with local law enforcements and you will be very savvy on the legal system and how it works. The primary needs today for agents is at the border of Mexico to stop the heavy drug trafficking and the illegal aliens from crossing the border.

As you can see, the homeland security agent plays many roles and duties in the criminal justice field. There are a lot more roles and duties than I can cover in this short article.

You don’t have to read the newspapers or watch the news to know that crime is growing rapidly. But what are the top stories – murder, rape, kidnapping, burglary — they’re all included.

Here are three different crime scenarios — one or more could affect you some day.

Scenario 1: It’s 2:00 AM and you hear a noise downstairs. You know it’s not your wife, children or pet so it must be a burglar. Now, do you go downstairs in your pajamas with a golf club to stop someone who has already heard you coming and is waiting for you? Or, do you call the police and hope they get there before the intruder comes upstairs to confront you?

Scenario 2: What if you’ve worked past dark and are going to your car in the parking lot. With your luck it will be poorly lit. Robbers and muggers know these places and just wait for someone trying to find their car. What do you do when he approaches you and asks for your money? Hopefully you’ll just give it to him and he’ll go away. But what if he doesn’t?

Scenario 3: Your child is walking home from school and a stranger approaches him or her. “Come on, little boy, get in my car and I’ll let you play with my puppy”. What does your child do?

Sounds pretty bad doesn’t it? How can we keep our families, home and business safe and secure in today’s world?

Well here are some ideas. Remember the three scenarios that I told you about at the top of this article? Here’s one solution for each of them:

Scenario 1: It’s 2:00 AM and you hear a noise downstairs. But instead of a burglar making the noise, you hear the loud alarm from a motion detector or door alarm. That potential burglar is long gone before you even have to put your life in jeopardy by going downstairs. The police will only find a broken door lock or window but no intrusion.

Scenario 2: What if that same potential robber approaches you and asks for your money and you ****** a stream of Pepper Spray into his face. Or, if he gets too close, you shock him with a Stun Gun which will drop him to the ground giving you time to get away and call 911.

Scenario 3: If you had given your child a Personal Alarm to carry in his or her pocket or on the belt, the loud alarm and your child’s screams would have likely drawn attention and scared the potential abductor away.

OK – What does it come down to?

Keeping your family and home protected has become a war between you and the bad guys. But Unfortunately THERE ARE NO RULES in this war! The creeps out there are playing for keeps and will do anything to win.

You have a decision to make, and as far as I’m concerned it’s a no-brainer!

You can continue living as you are, unprotected against attackers and burglars, or you can begin to ‘arm’ yourself and your home.
