A Stunning Solution to Self-Defense?

January 6th, 2010 admin No comments

Stun guns are a popular method of self-defense and are incredibly portable. Individuals concerned with protecting themselves can carry stun guns in a variety of methods and many such guns are camouflaged to appear like something altogether different.

Stun guns can give the carrier a sense of security, but that should never be an isolated assurance. You should always know where the exits and entrances are in buildings you frequent. If you have a long commute to school or work, always know where gas stations and stores are located. If your car has trouble during the drive, always try to get your vehicle off the main road and into the parking lot of a public facility. This will ensure that others are around.

If you regularly travel through dark areas or streets, be sure to also carry a cellular telephone and, if you see a stranger in need of help, stop at the nearest public area and let the authorities know. Do not stop unless there are other people around who aren’t involved with the automobile.

Handled properly and responsibly, a stun gun can give you an extra source of protection that you may not otherwise have. Many good designs are implemented to serve as an accessory of sorts. Often stun guns are found on key chains or other device that is attached to something bigger. This serves a dual purpose. If you device should accidentally slip from your hand, it will not fall into the hands of another person.

Stun guns are always compact in size and have been compared to the bulk of a flashlight. They use standard batteries and can have an impact from around 20,000 volts all the way to an astounding 150,000 volts. They are designed to render an attacker without controlled bodily functions for a brief period of time.

This temporary loss of movement is ideal for many, in that it is temporary, and gives a potential victim time to flee the vicinity and locate help. Stun guns can be concealed and carried in small areas. One model of a stun gun is the size of a writing pen, but can deliver a jolt of 150,000 volts.

Stun guns have a consistent design with one end of the device always featuring duel electrodes. The electric shock takes place when the electrodes are blocked. The energy will then attempt to route itself through the blockage, thus producing the effect or, “stun.”

Stun guns are often linked to “cattle prods,” but the two differ greatly in strength and purpose. Cattle prods are devices used by livestock owners to force the animal to do something. Prods deliver a painful shock. Stun guns deliver a shock, but it isn’t designed to inflict pain. A stun gun is devised to shock the attacker into falling. As they recover from the shock, you have time to escape.

The stun affects the nervous system of an attacker and makes voluntary movement impossible for the duration of the shock. Research will provide you with key information if you are in the market for a stun gun. You can cross-check voltage measurements, styles, and decide what option best suits your needs.

The Use and Effects of Pepper Spray

September 5th, 2009 admin No comments
Pepper spray is one of the most popular self defense products on the market today. If you have not heard of it before, it is a spray made out of a solution that contains extracts from chili peppers. When an individual is attacked, the pepper spray can be sprayed into the attacker’s eyes, causing temporary discomfort and even blindness, allowing the person being attacked the chance to escape.

Pepper spray comes in a wide range of sizes. Individuals commonly carry small pepper sprays for personal protection. There are even tiny pepper spray containers on the market today that can be slipped into a purse or pocket. For instance, one product, known as lipstick pepper spray, looks like a little tube of lipstick. However, when you open the cap it contains a small sprayer instead of makeup. Lipstick pepper spray and other small pepper spray containers can be attached to key chains as well to keep them handy in case of an attack.

Believe it or not, you can actually purchase pepper spray that is in a ring. This type of self defense is always on your hand, so it will not matter if your purse is stolen or you cannot reach your pocket or keys. All you have to do to dispense the pepper spray is point your hand towards your attackers face and touch your ring.

If you have ever looked into purchasing pepper spray, you have likely come across a product called Mace Spray. Mace Spray is a combination self defense spray that combines pepper spray, tear gas, and a marking dye. This is a highly effective self defense product. Mace Spray is the brand name for this type of defensive chemical spray, and this company was the first to market pepper spray and other defense sprays to the general product.

To understand how these products work, it is best to look at the three agents in Mace Spray, which are found in some combination in many pepper spray products. The pepper spray in the product makes the attacker’s eyes shut instantly because it acts as a powerful irritant and inflammatory agent. It will also cause choking and coughing, which typically cause the attacker to panic. Tear gas will cause the eyes to tear, making it difficult to see. Also, this agent causes the attacker’s face to burn and can cause disorientation. The effects of these two agents disappear after thirty minutes to an hour. The UV dye will mark the attacker so that he can be identified after the attack.

No matter how well the Mace Spray or pepper spray product that you have purchased works, if you do not know how to use it, it will not be of any use to you. Almost all of these products work in a similar fashion. To use the product, you must remain calm when you are attacked. Remember, you are in control because you have a way to defend yourself. The sprayer must be held upright. Then, you need to direct the spray at your attacker’s face. Spray for around five to six seconds. This should give enough of the irritant to the attacker to keep him immobilized for a while. Immediately run away and seek help.

It may help to practice using the pepper spray. However, you will not want to practice on a real person, as the effects of the spray are quite irritating. Consider practicing on a target that would be about face height. It is essential that you know where the trigger is on your pepper spray. It is also essential that you know how to get it out of your purse or pocket quickly before the attacker has a chance to immobilize your hands.

Top Personal Protection Gifts This Holiday Season

August 30th, 2009 admin No comments
It goes without saying that you want your loved ones to be safe, when they’re at home and especially when they’re away. With the current economy and the upcoming holiday season, it’s more important than ever to take precautions against theft and other forms of attack.

Presented below are personal protection gifts that give anyone an added security and advantage for responding when events take a turn for the worse. Personal protection gifts  make great gifts, affordably priced and easily gift-wrapped. But the peace of mind they’ll give you – and them – is a priceless gift that they’ll appreciate for years to come.

Pepper Spray and Capsicum – Personal protection items are an urban necessity for women and men alike, especially when moving out and about during the busy holiday shopping rushes. Pepper spray, a powerful deterrent against personal attack, is available in canisters that affix neatly to key chains and cell phone clips. Pepper spray is even available concealed in a LipStick case.

Pepper spray works by rapidly disbursing a stream of very concentrated chili pepper into an adversary’s eyes. The result is very painful and can take a great effort to soothe, but it’s ultimately not permanently damaging. Pepper spray is sometimes sold under the names OC spray, capsicum spray, or OC gas. A very effective protection device to ward off violent attack.

Stun Guns and Tasers – Stun guns and tasers are technology that are available to consumers today. Using powerful jolts of electricity to disable an opponent, these non-lethal but completely effective personal protection tools are affordably priced at many online personal protection outfitters. Always make sure your buying from an authorized taser dealer.

Like pepper spray, tasers and stun guns should be used properly and handled with extreme care. They are not toys, and should not be used by children.

Tactical Batons – A favorite of law enforcement personnel for years because they offer a more aggressive form of counter-attack, tactical batons are compact in storage but provide an effective deterrent against belligerent behavior. They’re available in several styles and models, including the most famous telescoping model. Their stainless steel construction makes them durable enough to last for years and survive the most challenging incident.

Personal Alarms – Providing a more non-violent response to personal attacks – while also offering a powerful deterrent – personal alarms are compact sirens, whistles and klaxons that deliver an attention-getting noise at a moment’s notice. Personal alarms are allowed in airplanes, schools and government buildings.

Many alarms are small enough to fit on keychains, and some include flashlights and carabineer clips for additional utility. They are battery powered but highly energy efficient. Many are affordably priced.

Diversion Safes – The hottest trend in home security, diversion safes are small safe-boxes cleverly camouflaged as ordinary household items. Some resemble typically mundane garage items such as cans of motor oil or engine fluid; some are built to perfectly resemble garden stones. For the inside of the house, some models take the shape of hardcover bound books.

Diversion safes offer a unique gift-giving opportunity as well. Rather than gift-wrapping, they can be placed in a house or yard according to their function. The gift giver can then invite the recipient to guess where the gift is. The revelation of its actual purpose will provide instantaneous surprise and also instruction on its use.
