Advice for Runners, Walkers and Hikers

March 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Be aware of your surroundings and listen to any out of the ordinary sounds. Yes this means, don’t put head phones on and expect to know if someone is following you! I know music makes it easier to keep a pace, but if you must listen to music, please make sure that you turn the volume down. Stay alert and try not to daydream. Enjoy the “now” of your routine, the scenery, the energizing feeling your body gets. If you can, take a buddy with you, human or pet. Make it a point to schedule your routine at different times of the day. This is a good practice because most attackers study their victims in advance and know their patterns. So, keeping a varied schedule is safer! If you have the ability to do your exercise in the afternoon or mornings, this is even better. If your exercise routine is hiking, the same advice applies. While hiking, you have to be especially careful of the surrounding trees, bushes, rocks, hills, etc. They make good hiding places for attackers!

Another important factor that runners, walkers and hikers must consider is the possibility of having to defend themselves against an attacker. Now, I know some of you might say that this will never happen to you or that you are strong enough to take care of yourself. But there is always the possibility of things not going in your favor, and other factors that you would not have anticipated. It is better to be prepared for any situation. When you walk or run, you could unfortunately be assaulted by a stranger or a dog! If you hike, again you could be attacked by not only a human but you could be attacked by a bear! I guess it depends on where you hike! For all of these situations there is a self-defense product you can carry that will help prevent such attacks.

If you are near civilization you should carry a product such as pepper spray or mace. There are many types and sizes of pepper spray you can choose from our website. If you know that you are at a higher risk of being attacked by a dog, you can carry the Mace brand Muzzle pepper spray. There is even a product that repels dogs using an ultrasonic sound wave; The Ultrasonic Dog Chaser. If you hike where bears might be present, you can carry Guard Alaska Bear Repellent, also made by Mace.

Of course there are other products that you can carry depending on how comfortable you feel using them. There are stun gun and Taser options as well as personal alarm options, all of which you can find on our website. Either way, it is better to carry something for self-defense than nothing at all!

Self Defense Products – The Non-Lethal Alternative

February 12th, 2010 admin No comments

Police departments all over the world use them. Military forces throughout the world use them too. Millions of civilians around the world use them as well. Why shouldn’t you? What are we talking about?

We are taking about the array of non-lethal weapons like stun guns, tasers, pepper sprays, et. al. of course.

These self defense products give the users a viable alternative to a deadly outcome in any kind of a confrontation. In the case of police, over 11,000 U.S. police agencies have come to the conclusion that the taser for example gives them one more alternative in the continuum of force response to a legal and lawful order.

In the case of individuals who choose a non-lethal self defense product they have made a conscious decision to avoid the use of deadly force and at least like the police give themselves one more alternative to it. Some do it for religious reasons some for other reasons but no matter.

The fact is that no matter what the reason for using these products to protect and defend themselves from the bad guys that would do them harm-the products WORK.

Their purpose is simple: to allow the victim to escape a potentially deadly situation and seek help. They all perform this function very well.

A short spritz of OC pepper spray in an assailant’s eyes may give you up to 15-20 minutes to get away. A 2 second shot from a stun gun will incapacitate an assailant for 5-10 minutes. The taser has nearly 100% stopping power and will allow you plenty of time to seek help.

The point is they all work at doing their job with non lethal results. Non-lethal self defense products have become the choice for millions of citizens and military and police agencies around the world.

Bandit Towing – The Crime of Towing Fraud

February 8th, 2010 admin No comments

Crime is everywhere and all around us. Not all crime is requires the use of stun guns or pepper spray to thwart a potential assault or robbery. Some crimes are perpetrated by white collar or blue collar people who take advantage of others when they least expect it.

Unscrupulous tow truck drivers are towing away more than illegally parked vehicles in towing scams.

Tow truck drivers are like cabbies. They are hardworking individuals out to make an honest buck. They will be there whenever you need them. They come to take away your car whenever your car breaks down. Outside of this invaluable service, tow truck drivers also clear the city streets and private parking lots of illegally parked cars. Parking is a huge demand for customers who patronize businesses. No doubt, business owners will need available spaces into which their customers can park. However, illegal parking can put a dent into a business owner’s pocketbook if there is no place to park.

As one can plainly see, towing is a legitimate business that services the needs of the customer. So what is all this talk about a towing scam called “bandit towing?”

“Bandit” tow truck drivers are black hat operators who make it a practice to monitor privately owned parking lots in order to tow away cars whose owners are not patronizing businesses associated with that lot. In many instances, the bandit tow truck driver ignores the fact that the car’s owner does patronize a business associated with the lot before going to another business.

If you have ever been a victim of the crime of “bandit” towing, keep these facts in mind: The tow truck driver does not have a legal lien on your car until it is in transit on a public highway.

• If your vehicle is already mounted on a tow truck but is still in the parking lot, the crooked tow truck operator ask you for half of what an official police impound lot would charge for towing.

• If you refuse or do not have the means to pay the requested amount, the issue becomes a civil matter, and the tow truck operator must release your car.

• If the crooked tow truck operator leaves the parking lot with your car because you could not pay the requested amount, then the tow truck operator is in violation of the law. He is taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Check the laws in your state because those laws may protect you from unscrupulous tow truck drivers.

Here are some classic towing schemes:

1. In some schemes, car repair or car maintenance shops are ripped off by con artists posing as tow truck operators. They call the shops telling them that they are bringing in a car for repairs or services. The con artist performs the required paperwork then hands the car repair owner or employee the keys. The business they pays the con artist the towing fee thinking they will be re-imbursed the money. Only there is no car being towed and the keys are just random keys.

2. In many places, there are laws against tow truck drivers who drive around looking for parking violations so that they can tow cars away. The towing company circumvents this obstacle by having somebody else do the looking. Some of the time, the same person who owns the towing company owns the business actively in search of cars to tow. This is perfectly legal in many places believe it or not. To make things worse, these crooked towing companies target low-income housing and apartment complexes.

3. Some bandit tow truck operators profile vehicles for the best chance at successfully earning a buck. They ignore old, beat up vehicles because their owners are usually low-income individuals who might not be able to afford the impound fees. If that is the case, the towing company might have to deal with local authorities to have the vehicle disposed of, and the car may take up valuable parking space. They also shy away from expensive cars such as Lamborhini, Porsche, and BMW because of the possibility of damaging the vehicle during a tow and risking a lawsuit. This leaves everybody in the middle a potential mark with Japanese cars topping the favorites list.

4. Some of the time, a crooked tow truck operator will insist that your vehicle be towed to “his” shop for services. Do NOT fall for this. You have every right to have your car towed to wherever you want. If they will not do this, then try to find somebody else to tow your car where you want it to go.

How to Avoid Crooked Towing Schemes

1. Know the local laws regarding towing.

2. Do not leave the property of the business where your car is parked. If a bandit tow truck operator is eying that particular parking lot, your car could be towed in a matter of minutes.

3. If you believe you are a victim of towing fraud, take the time to fill out a police report. If you just let it slide, you are not only out a few hundred dollars, but the crooked tower can find another victim to prey on. Therefore, do your civic duty to fight these crimes, and get a police report filed right away.

Self Defense Products As Part of Your Self Defense Strategy

February 4th, 2010 admin 1 comment

The right to defend oneself and ones’ property is a God given right and one of the most basic rights of a free society along with the right to bear arms. Men have always had to protect everything from his life to all his possessions.

Today we depend on laws, a civilized society and the police to help protect us. However police resources are spread thinner each day. Individuals must assume more responsibility for their own safety and security and that of their loved ones.

Where do non lethal self defense products fit into your self defense strategy?

Self defense products are an integral part of the strategy. Stun guns, pepper sprays, personal alarms, etc have their place for sure. You also need to know how to use them and practice using them so when the time comes you are ready and act reflexively.

Another key ingredient is learning some basic self defense techniques that can build your confidence. Self Defense DVD’s allow you to learn in the comfort of your own home at your own pace from world class instructors.

I have long been a proponent of teaching school age children basic self defense skills in school then repeated for several years

Once you have the basics get a friend and practice using your self defense training, practice using your pepper spray or stun gun. If and when the time comes to defend yourself you want your instincts to take over and react not stop and think about what to do.

If you take these steps you will take a giant leap in building your confidence in and your actual ability to defend your self and your family.

Curbstoning – A Form of Car Sales Fraud

January 21st, 2010 admin No comments

Crime is everywhere and all around us. Not all crime is requires the use of stun guns or pepper spray to thwart a potential assault or robbery. Some crimes are perpetrated by white collar or blue collar people who take advantage of others when they least expect it.

By pretending to be private sellers, curbstoners are circumventing the law by selling their cars on the street.

What is curbstoning?

Curbstoning in the practice of auto dealers pretending to be private sellers when selling their cars. Used car dealers engaged in this practice as a way to sell cars of substandard quality to unsuspecting buyers. Perhaps there is a street or parking lot near your residence where there are several cars up for sale. Many of these cars are placed in public view by “curbstoners.” Hence the name because they park the cars along the curb. Many of these curbstoned vehicles may very well be lemons or junk cars that car dealers could not sell on their lots to make a decent profit.

Crooked car dealers use this technique as a way to go around state laws regarding the sale of cars. States have enacted legislation that puts a cap on how many cars a private individual may buy and sell in a given period of time without having to be a licensed auto dealer. Licensed car dealers have requirements that they have to meet in order to stay in business. Curbstoners do not.

Internet Sales-A New Breed of Curbstoners

The internet is a new way for curbstoners to pawn off their cars. It is easy for sellers to conceal both their identity and location from buyers and government agencies that try to keep an eye on them. Auction powerhouse eBay has become the preferred site for crooked sellers looking to scam unsuspecting buyers.

How does curbstoning work?

Before a curbstoner can ***** over a buyer, they must have a junk car to sell. These cars are typically obtained at the low rent auto auctions held at wrecking yard and towing company impound lots. These cars are then “prepped” for sale despite the numerous mechanical problems.

From there, many of these cars are placed on eBay, AutoTrader, AutoMart, and many other sites. These scammers use many other scamming methods while conducting their online sales with affinity fraud being one of the more popular techniques. Another popular technique is using low-resolution photos. Poor quality photos can easily hide cracked windshields, dents, rust, faded paint, and scratches.

Government Agencies are Limited in Combatting Curbstoning

States have agents assigned to thwart curbstoning. However, there are not enough agents to do this job because they have other duties to attend to. For this reason, there are very few sanctions against curbstoners. Criminal convictions are minimal. States can reprimand licensed dealers who engaged in curbstoning, but even this is not enough.

Auction website, eBay, has also employed methods to combat curbstoning. eBay will suspend any account holder and cooperate with law enforcement. What happens many times, however, is that once an account is suspended, the crooked sellers simply open up a new user id and re-engage in crooked sales.

If you are in the marketing for a used car, and the seller does not have a title in their name, beware. A buyer purchasing a used car from an unlicensed seller runs a high risk that:

1. The vehicle may be stolen.

2. You may not get a clear title, unless a remedy or court order is sought and ruled in your favor.

3. The vehicle may have a rolled-back odometer.

4. The vehicle may be salvaged, reconditioned, or flood damaged.

5. The vehicle may have a lien that has not been properly released.

6. The vehicle may have been sold for EXPORT ONLY.

Vigilance is the Key to Avoiding Curbstoners

As a buyer of any used vehicle, only you have the responsibility of detecting scams before you end up being scammed.

• Stock to the age-old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In the case of a used car, if the price seems too good for what you are getting, you could be getting scammed.

• Check that the name on the driver license of the seller is consistent with that of the title of the car. If you are purchasing a car on the internet, ask that the seller provide clear scanned images of both documents. If the names do not match, do NOT buy the car!

• Have the car inspected by a mechanic that you trust. A good car mechanic is like a house inspector. He can spot problems with the product that people in general would normally not detect.

• Use vehicle history reports. There are services all over the web that allows you to run a vehicle history report. These reports will identify any vehicles that have been salvaged, been in major accidents, rolled-back odometers, etc. They will also show title transfers. If you see there have been more than 1 or 2 title transfers in the past couple years, avoid this car.

• Buy a car from a reputable car dealer. Identifying a reputable car dealer can be troublesome, but they do exist. Dealers who have been in business for quite some time and have certified used car programs are a good bet. They are a lot better bet than purchasing from a crooked seller whom you will not be able to contact when the deal goes bad.

• Avoid buying a car on the internet. It is better to test drive the car in person before you make the decision to buy instead of reading up on the seller’s good points about the car. If you DO make the decision to buy a car online, try to pick it up on person and request that the seller allow you to nullify the deal if you are dissatisfied with the car’s condition when you see it in actuality.

Self Defense – Non Lethal Self Defense Weapons – Peace Of Mind

January 15th, 2010 admin No comments

When I was growing up I remember my Aunt Kate and Uncle Harry, may they Rest in Peace. They were so nice to us kids. Seeing my cousins was fun too, but the best part of the visits was:

THE FOOD-omigosh could Aunt Kate cook-old school- none of that healthy stuff here. No worry about trans fats she used real fat.

THE OLD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS-they kept out in the garage by the stacks, thousands of them. I wonder if they ever got read?

THE OLD REVOLVER-in the attic. Uncle Harry bought it for protection. They lived in the country, kind of semi-remote.

I couldn’t ever quite grasp how that would work. If there was a problem, climb the stairs, dig thru the mess, find the gun, find the bullets, load the gun, “I’ll be right there Mr. burglar.” YEAH RIGHT!

I know he hid it up there so no one would get hurt but honestly there are other ways of feeling safe and secure at home. Self defense products such as stun guns and pepper sprays come to mind. They are the way to go when you don’t want a gun in the house.

Non lethal self defense weapons are easy to conceal, easy to carry, and some are disguisable. They are inexpensive and legal in all states. They are the way for you to get that warm fuzzy feeling for your safety and security.

I live in Colorado where there are no restrictions. A few states do have restrictions so check with your local police department.

So before you go buy a stun gun or pepper spray do some homework before you invest time and money into self-defense products. Figure out what you need, how to use that product, and the legality of it, or you may be getting into trouble.

Self defense products can get you out of a bad situation – there is no doubt about that. They can save your life, your money and provide you with peace of mind.

Call Up Personal Protection With a Cell Phone Stun Gun

January 10th, 2010 admin No comments

A person walking to their car carrying a can of pepper spray or a taser in their hand may feel on edge because they are expecting an immediate problem. In the worst case scenario, that level of anxiety may cause them to misinterpret a threat. Carrying a Cell Phone Stun Gun that feels like a normal object can help put people at ease enough to be able to exercise good judgment. Knowing that they have the power to stop an attack allows people to feel confident, while at the same time not encouraging them to act rashly.

People often need to make the decision to respond with force within a brief moment. It most cases it is a moment fueled by adrenalin and panic. The only way to ensure a positive outcome is to have a device that is easy to operate safely. The Cell Phone Stun Gun can stop an attacker with 800,000 volts of power but provides a mechanism where it is disabled if the attacker snatches the gun away from the owner. The owner wraps a wrist strap around their wrist and attaches one end to the stun gun. If the pin is pulled out of the stun gun, the gun is disabled and cannot be used to harm the owner.

Modern technology allows personal self defense weapons to not only look like something else, but one device can now deliver 800,000 volts to fight off an attack as well as serve as a flashlight. The Cell Phone Stun Gun also has a 100 db level alarm to provide an extra measure of protection. The stun gun delivers all of these features but remains compact. The powerful, feature filled self defense weapon is a mere inch thick and only 4.5 inch tall x 1.75 inches wide.

Police Overreact with a Taser Gun

Self-defense Weapons Becoming a Priority

September 22nd, 2009 admin No comments
During the last decade or two crime has risen to epidemic proportions. It wasn’t long ago when you could let your kids play outside without worrying that they might disappear. You could take you family to the park and watch from a short distance while your kids played o the swings and other toys. Unfortunately, that is not the case anymore.

We hear about child abductions every single day. Even the most remote, tiny and crime-free towns have been targeted and children taken from their yards, their rooms, the bus stop and more. Many of us don’t let our kids – even the older ones – go to the mall or other places without us.

Many of us have been looking for reliable, non-lethal self defense weapons that will stop a predator in their tracks without killing them. The idea is to get the situation – and the predator- under control so that you can get to safety and call the police.

There are some powerful and affordable tools on the market today. There are more choices and better choices of self-defense weapons that have been made available to the public in the last few years.

Some of the most effective self-defense weapons are stun guns, tasers and pepper sprays of various kinds. Stun guns will attack an individual’s nervous system, rendering an intruder or attacker incapacitated long enough for you to get away and get help. Tasers are similar, but more powerful. Instead of simply interfering with the perpetrator’s nervous system, a taser will actually override it and leave the individually incapacitated for longer, giving you more time to get away and call for help. Tasers are designed to stop even the most aggressive attackers.

Another effective and powerful self-defense weapon is pepper spray. There are varieties of pepper spray, pepper gel and pepper foam. They all work in a similar way by causing the attacker to close their eyes, which makes them burn more, and cough and choke. If you re using pepper gel or pepper foam, there is an added discomfort. Both of these will get on the skin and start burning and stinging. Though pepper spray comes in containers small enough to fit in your pocket, it is an extremely effective, non-lethal self defense weapon.

No matter what kind of self-defense tool or weapon you are looking for to keep yourself and your family safe, you should be able to find one that fits your circumstances.

Which Protection Is Best For Me?

September 3rd, 2009 admin No comments
Unfortunately in this day and time, people have to hope for the best but be mindful of the worst and prepare accordingly.  We are here to help you understand what kind of protection you need in any given situaiton.  During this write-up we are going to discuss some of the major Do’s and Don’ts of properly Choosing and Using protection.

First there are so many different kinds of protection devices on the market today.  People have options to choose from, but unfortunately people get confused and end up going with no protection or the wrong protection because they don’t know what they need.  First and foremost you must know the limitations that your local and or state goverment have placed on different protection devices.  If it isn’t legal to carry something, whether you like it or not, we don’t ever recommend you breaking the law.  We have included the known limitations on pepper spray and stun guns on our website, but ultimately the responsibility lies with the consumer to know their local restrictions.

We personally recommend 2.5 million volt stun guns (with safety pin) for civilians.  Why?  Because statistically speaking most of the time you will not know you are going to be a victim of a crime until the assailant is extremely close to you.  In addition, some of these are the only devices made, when used properly, that can’t be used against you. (remember the safety pin feature)  But I don’t want to let an assailant get that close to me!  Neither do we, but ultimately you don’t have that choice.  Normally the assailant doesn’t stand on the other side of the street and yell that they are coming to assault you.

Secondly, we recommend FOX spray and tasers (tasers do require passing a background investigation), because these both need distance to the assailant but are extremely effective.  If you are security personnel or law enforcement, then you don’t want a stun gun.  Simply speaking, this is your job to always be prepared and you have back-up to help if a situation arises.  A civilian doesn’t have the same opportunity as you.

What about batons, slappers, knives, blackcats, screechers, personal alarms, and so forth you may ask?  These are options, but some of these require either certifications or special training to know how to properly use.  These could be additions to either Pepper Spray, Stun Guns, or Tasers but we don’t recommend these to become your primary defense device.

You ultimately have the choice to make and hopefully this information above will help you make that choice.  Remember to get something or somethings that you will feel comfortable carrying.  This is an important decision that could ultimately save your life.

If you have any questions with choosing the right protection device, then please email us your questions and one of our team members will be back with you shortly.  trcarter4@msn.com  Most importantly to all, be safe and always aware of your surroundings.
