Good Cops are Prepared, How About You?

September 12th, 2009 admin No comments
The following information was compiled by BY JASON KOTOWSKI, Californian staff writer.

The average cop or deputy on the street use:

• Pepper spray — Also called OC spray (for oleoresin capsicum), used to irritate the eyes and cause pain. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ed Komin said the effects of the spray usually wear off 45 minutes after exposure. If you get pepper sprayed Officer Scott Lazenby said you need fresh air and patience.

• Taser — An electroshock weapon that can be used from a distance of up to 25 feet by firing prongs that stick into a person, or by placing the weapon against a suspect and activating it. The weapon delivers a shock that causes pain and muscle contraction for five seconds, but after the shock is over there is no lasting effect. Police Detective Kevin P. Findley said one drawback to the Taser is that some suspects are able to pull the prongs out after they’re hit. This weapon is the most recent addition to law enforcement. Every deputy is armed with a Taser and so are many, but not all, police officers.

• Baton — Perhaps the oldest less-lethal weapon that law enforcement uses, the baton is a short stick, typically made of wood, used to hit certain parts of the body to incapacitate a suspect. A drawback, said Komin, is that a lasting injury can result.

• In addition, some officers in the police department use a Pepper Ball gun. This CO2-powered gun, very similar to a paintball gun, fires small pellets that release pepper spray when they break open.

There are several important implications to this article. First, if the police are becoming aware that there are non-lethal ways of subduing attackers, there is hope for the rest of us. Secondly, there are self-defense tools available to all of us. We have choices and can get information regarding which tools are best for our needs.

It is essential in this day and age that we protect ourselves from the unexpected. If we knew when and where we might be attacked we could avoid the situation all together. since we do not know when we might be a target it is best to take precautions and stay safe.

Do you think police should be tasering 6 year olds ?

Miami-Dade police tasered a 6-year-old boy who was wielding a piece of glass in a school office and threatening to hurt himself, officials confirmed Thursday.

Police say they followed their own guidelines and only tasered the child because they were afraid he would hurt himself. But the incident has raised calls for the department tighten its policies regarding the use of the stun guns, which shoot 50,000 volts of electric current through a subject.

The incident happened on Oct. 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School. The principal, Maria Mason, called 911 after the child, who has not been identified, broke a picture frame in the assistant principal’s office. Then the boy began waving the piece of glass around, holding a security guard at bay.

Two Miami-Dade police officers responded, followed by a school police officer. When they got there, the boy already had a cut under his right eye and another on his hand from the glass. The three officers talked to the boy, trying to get him to put down the glass, according to a police report.
Broken glass or not, you will never convince me that the use of a Taser was justified unless the poor little fellow had a loaded gun. Also maybe the kid had the glass to his throat ready to cut his throat. Show me a 6-year old who can identify his jugular vein, let alone know that is what was needed to kill himself. Please. He may have been cutting himself but I can see no reason why they couldn’t just rush up to him, grab his little wrist and make him drop it. Period.
Let’s see, we have one six year old with a piece of glass versus two cops, a security guard, and God alone knows how many other adults. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a six year old that could not be subdued by simply taking hold of his wrist.

Excessive force. I can’t imagine using a taser on a six year old armed with anything less than a gun.
Black Ja…So should will sue for the trauma of the child being stunned. They also need to sue the school because he got a piece of glass on their property. Sue the teachers too for not recognizing that the child had problems and they could have prevented it. Sue whoever made the glass for not making it childproof.

Should police officers be allowed to use tasers on citizens?

I have read numerous news stories across the country of police officers tasing citizens for minor reasons. If a suspect has a gun, then obviously a police officer is going to use his gun also. So why use tasers to electrocute citizens for minor reasons? According to Amnesty International, more than 144 citizens have died already after being tasered by police.

Currently as it stands, most police departments have a policy that states that police officers can taser a citizen for just doing nothing wrong but disobeying an order. Critics are mad because more than 200 citizens have died after being tasered by the police. Many citizens want a taser policy that says tasers can only be used in deadly situations.

Why are police officers bullying citizens with tasers?

Why are police officers using tasers on citizens for minor reasons? I read more and more news stories of citizens being tasered for small things.

Why are police officers tasing so many people and should tasers only be used in deadly situations?

Currently police departments have little restrictions on when and how they can taser a person. Non-violent citizens, elderly citizens, and even handicapped citizens have been tasered by the police. According to Amnesty International, more than 200 citizens have died after being tasered by the police. In most instances the victims were non-violent and had no weapons on them.

When will americans tell their elected officials that tasers shouldnt be used on citizens for small reasons?

Police policies of when and how to taser a person are way too liberal. We as americans need to to our elected officials that we only want tasers to be used in deadly situations. Police officers will tase people for small resaons because their policies allow it. Ive even read news stories about innocent people getting tased because they were mistaken for somebody else.
