I also mentioned there are a couple states that have restrictions on owning a stun gun. The list of those states is pretty short and only includes Connecticut and Illinois. If you live in Illinois you must hold a valid FOID card and pass a background check as well as get through a 24 hours waiting period. In Connecticut you must obtain a permit from Mayor or Chief of Police. You may need to be finger printed and have an investigation of your criminal background conducted. If you are a felon you cannot obtain this permit.

As you can see the number of states that limit or ban the use of stun guns is small but it is very important to know this information before trying to get your hands on one. Like I said, they are a great way to protect yourself but there are also other very effective alternatives if you live in one of the states where it is illegal to own one.
