Which Personal Self Defense Weapon Works the Best

January 9th, 2010 admin No comments

Pepper sprays, stun guns, kubotans, they all work well for preventing an assault, but does one self-defense weapon really work any better than another? There is no short answer to this question. Each personal defense weapon has advantages as well as disadvantages. I’ve already written a number of articles on how some of these weapons work, so this time I’ll just attempt to give you a brief description of the pros and cons of some of the more popular self-defense weapons, and then only you can decide which one works best for you.

Pepper spray
Pepper spray is an excellent self-defense weapon but it does have limitations. The chemical heat generated from defensive sprays works extremely well at stopping an attacker in their tracks. Pepper spray causes an almost instantaneous inflammation of the mucus membranes in the eyes, nose, throat and lungs of your attacker, causing them a great deal of pain as well as the inability to open their eyes or catch their breath, thus allowing you to get away.

The average pepper spray on the market today has a range of anywhere from 8 feet up to 20 feet allowing you to use the device from considerable distance away from your would be attacker. The limitations of pepper spray are that your attacker must be hit in or around the area of their face for it to be effective.

Unfortunately, wind conditions can have an effect on the direction of the spray. Also many assaults happen from behind or by surprise, making it difficult to take aim with a defensive spray. On the other hand, if you have your pepper spray ready and are alert enough to your surrounding to avoid being surprised, then pepper spray is possibly the most effective non lethal defense weapon you can have.

Stun Guns
Stun guns are another excellent self-defense weapon. They use electrical voltage to disrupt the muscle functions of your attacker. The voltage produced by a stun gun causes some pain but more importantly, they interfere with the neurological impulses from the brain to the muscles rendering your attacker unable to control their muscle function. The down side to a stun device is that the electrodes must come into contact with your target. That means that your attacker has to be right in your face before you can use the weapon against them.

On the plus side, stun guns are effective almost anywhere on the body, so if you are attacked from behind or surprised, you don’t need to take aim as you would with the defensive sprays. Just reach around and jam the weapon into your attackers body, then push the button.

Kubotans
Kubotans are possibly the most popular of all personal self-defense weapons. One reason is that the kubotan is a highly effective pressure point weapon that is considered non lethal and legal almost everywhere. (I say almost everywhere because even though I don’t know of anywhere that they’re not legal, I also don’t know every law in every city in the country. I will however say this, if they are illegal somewhere, that law needs to be changed).
Another reason kubotans are so popular is that they are extremely easy to carry. While there are a number of different styles of kubotans, the average one is little more than a stick that’s about 5 ½ inches long and about ½ inch in diameter. They can be easily carried in your pocket and most of the kubotans today have a key ring attached to them, which makes them readily available whenever you are carrying your keys with you.

Knives
Knives are rarely used for self-defense purposes. While they can make an excellent self-defense weapon, few people are truly prepared to cut or stab another person. There’s something about slashing another human being that would make most people all too aware of just how soft and fragile their own bodies are. I have personally spent some time learning knife-fighting techniques, but it’s still not my weapon of choice.

Handguns
The final weapons that I’ll talk about today are handguns. What can be said about a gun that hasn’t already been said? Handguns are possibly the ultimate self-defense weapons. Even someone with minimal intelligence is likely to stop whatever they’re doing when they find themselves looking down the barrel of a loaded gun. The only downside to guns is that almost anyone can pull the trigger of a gun and kill another person. Even a small child can accidentally shoot and kill someone with a handgun. A number of people are accidentally killed every year by someone who didn’t know how to properly use a gun. This can make guns very dangerous in the wrong hands.
I am personally a strong advocate for the right to bear arms, but I am just as strongly opposed to anyone handling a firearm without the proper training.

That’s about it for today folks. I could go on and on about self-defense weapons, but this article is already getting a bit lengthy. I’ll go into more detail with some of my future articles, but for now, I hope that I’ve given you enough brain food to cause you to want to do some of your own research on self-defense weapons.

Useful Information on Tasers, Stuns Guns, and Pepper Spray

January 8th, 2010 admin No comments

In today’s society you don’t have to look far to see the effects of increasing crime rates. Year after year the number of murders, kidnapping, sexual crimes seems to rise. The fact is no one is safe from these kinds of crimes; they are present in every state, city, and town. As sad as it sounds these crimes are especially common against women and children.

Many people feel that their best option for protection is to purchase a gun. Owning and carrying a gun can actually be more dangerous than not having one. The fact is many people that own guns are not trained in using them. The majority of criminals have experience with guns and the majority of people with them are not trained to use them and have never even pulled the trigger. This makes it very easy for an assailant to obtain the gun from your possession and use it on you. On top of that obvious draw back, it is difficult to obtain a gun legally.

However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The self defense industry is growing ever larger as time goes on. This means there is more and more choices for individuals out there to protect themselves. There is a whole ocean of choice for everyone, these range from pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, personal alarms, batons, and many more. It doesn’t matter what your situation is there is the perfect self defense product out there waiting for you.

Pepper Spray:

Pepper spray is one of the most common self defense products out there. It is also known as OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray. There are several different types of pepper spray out there including liquid, gel, or mist. On top of the different types there are different potency. Pepper spray is measured in scoville heat units which is the percent of Oleoresin Capsicum in the pepper spray itself. This is actually the same way that hot sauce is measured. Why you ask? Because pepper spray is actually an extract of peppers, hence the term pepper spray. Some of the hottest spray out there is rated up to 18% which is very strong and effective.

Just like with most other self defense products there are many different packaging options that look like harmless common items such as: lipstick, cell phones, pagers, and key chains. This means you have the ability to catch your assailant by surprise and regain the upper hand.

Stun Guns:

Once of the most common types of self defense weapons is a stun gun or other related electroshock weapons. Most stun gun type weapons release a very high voltage shock, up to 1 million volts, of static electricity. These weapons may seem very dangerous but due to the low amperage there is no permanent damage caused to the person it is used on. The electrical shock effects the nervous system and causes rapid convulsions of the muscles that will reduce the blood sugar and temporarily demobilize the person it is used on.

One of the very appealing points for stun guns is the fact they come in many shapes and sizes. They range from 80,000 volts all the way up to 1 million volts. On top of that they are available as many common items such as, Cigarette lighters, cell phones, pens, and flashlights.

Tasers:

Another type of electroshock device is known as a taser. A taser is similar to a stun in that uses an electrical current to incapacitate the individual it is used on. The major difference between the two is how it passes that electrical current. A stun gun needs to be used by obtaining direct contact with the assailant where a taser uses two probes attached to wire and normally uses compressed gas to launch at the attacker. Tasers are a most costly solution but are much more effective and safe for the users. The most common deployment of tasers is by law enforcement officers.

Overall most self defense products will help you get the upper hand as long as they are used properly. They do not guarantee that you will be safe but they surely help. When it comes down to it you best defense is to use your head and pay attention to your surroundings and know when something is not right so you can avoid it.

The Use and Effects of Pepper Spray

September 5th, 2009 admin No comments
Pepper spray is one of the most popular self defense products on the market today. If you have not heard of it before, it is a spray made out of a solution that contains extracts from chili peppers. When an individual is attacked, the pepper spray can be sprayed into the attacker’s eyes, causing temporary discomfort and even blindness, allowing the person being attacked the chance to escape.

Pepper spray comes in a wide range of sizes. Individuals commonly carry small pepper sprays for personal protection. There are even tiny pepper spray containers on the market today that can be slipped into a purse or pocket. For instance, one product, known as lipstick pepper spray, looks like a little tube of lipstick. However, when you open the cap it contains a small sprayer instead of makeup. Lipstick pepper spray and other small pepper spray containers can be attached to key chains as well to keep them handy in case of an attack.

Believe it or not, you can actually purchase pepper spray that is in a ring. This type of self defense is always on your hand, so it will not matter if your purse is stolen or you cannot reach your pocket or keys. All you have to do to dispense the pepper spray is point your hand towards your attackers face and touch your ring.

If you have ever looked into purchasing pepper spray, you have likely come across a product called Mace Spray. Mace Spray is a combination self defense spray that combines pepper spray, tear gas, and a marking dye. This is a highly effective self defense product. Mace Spray is the brand name for this type of defensive chemical spray, and this company was the first to market pepper spray and other defense sprays to the general product.

To understand how these products work, it is best to look at the three agents in Mace Spray, which are found in some combination in many pepper spray products. The pepper spray in the product makes the attacker’s eyes shut instantly because it acts as a powerful irritant and inflammatory agent. It will also cause choking and coughing, which typically cause the attacker to panic. Tear gas will cause the eyes to tear, making it difficult to see. Also, this agent causes the attacker’s face to burn and can cause disorientation. The effects of these two agents disappear after thirty minutes to an hour. The UV dye will mark the attacker so that he can be identified after the attack.

No matter how well the Mace Spray or pepper spray product that you have purchased works, if you do not know how to use it, it will not be of any use to you. Almost all of these products work in a similar fashion. To use the product, you must remain calm when you are attacked. Remember, you are in control because you have a way to defend yourself. The sprayer must be held upright. Then, you need to direct the spray at your attacker’s face. Spray for around five to six seconds. This should give enough of the irritant to the attacker to keep him immobilized for a while. Immediately run away and seek help.

It may help to practice using the pepper spray. However, you will not want to practice on a real person, as the effects of the spray are quite irritating. Consider practicing on a target that would be about face height. It is essential that you know where the trigger is on your pepper spray. It is also essential that you know how to get it out of your purse or pocket quickly before the attacker has a chance to immobilize your hands.
